Radon Test Prep Checklist
For sellers, occupants, and listing agents. Following these steps keeps your 48-hour radon test valid under Illinois protocol and avoids costly retests that can delay closing.
Starting 12 hours before the test, and for the full 48 hours
- Keep all windows closed on every level of the home.
- Keep exterior doors closed, except for normal, brief coming and going.
- Normal heating and central air conditioning are fine. Set the thermostat to a normal setting.
- Do not run whole-house fans, attic fans, window fans, or any system that brings in outside air.
- Do not use fireplaces or wood stoves unless they are the home’s main heat source.
- If the home has a radon mitigation system, leave it running as normal.
During the test
- Do not move, unplug, cover, or touch the radon monitor.
- Keep pets and children away from the monitor.
- Normal daily living is fine — cooking, showering, and laundry won’t affect the test.
- Let us know about any showings scheduled during the test so visitors can be reminded to keep doors and windows closed.
Before we arrive
- Provide access for setup and for pickup at least 48 hours later (lockbox or occupant).
- Clear a small space in the lowest livable level of the home where the monitor can sit undisturbed.
- Tell us if the home has a radon mitigation system or any recent foundation work.
Why it matters: Our continuous radon monitor records radon levels hour by hour and logs movement and tampering. Illinois rules prohibit interfering with a radon measurement, and a test run without closed-house conditions may need to be repeated.
